Old Barry’s Bay Road is getting a makeover.
This comes after Madawaska Valley Council announced that $1.7-million of funding has been given to the township through the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund. The funding will allow the township to redo about 13 kilometres of the road as well as things like widening the shoulders.
Madawaska Valley Mayor Kim Love says a big part of having a successful application was doing some work beforehand.
Love says that township staff saw Brudenell, Lyndoch and Raglan’s successful OCIF application for Letterkenny Road in 2017, which was also shovel ready when submitted.
With the funding and the portion of the road that was redone last summer, there’s still almost 3 kilometres left to do on Old Barry’s Bay Road. Love says finishing the road is now council’s top priority as far as roads projects go because of how it’s used.
Love says that with Old Barry’s Bay Road being finished this summer, other road projects may be shifted back as a result. However, she says this means in future years more roads could be done at a time with such a large project out of the way.
Operations Manager Hilary Kutchkoskie says getting this project done will make a big effect in the township’s asset management plan moving forward.
The township began tendering for the project a few months ago, which Love says means they got better prices from a lot of bidders.
Construction is set to start later in the summer, but no firm date has been set yet.
