The 25th Barry’s Bay Triathlon is hitting local roads and lakes next weekend.
Over the years, the triathlon has seen hundreds of visitors come from far and wide to take part in the event, which features 32 kilometres of cycling, eight kilometres of running, and 750 metres of swimming. The event will take athletes from Barry’s Bay up to Aylen Lake and back.
Race Director Elser Lee Archer says a big part of what has made the triathlon so successful keeping athletes safe while they run, bike or swim.
Each year, Archer says the event sees well over 100 people taking part. She says this helps a lot of local businesses as well, as it means families also make the trip to Barry’s Bay to support loved ones taking part.
She says organizers are actually looking at having it changed to be a qualifying race for bigger triathlons.
Archer says that triathletes come from major city centres like Ottawa and Toronto for the event, as well as some from the USA.
This year’s triathlon will take place on July 8th at 9:00am, with participants starting at Lakeshore Park in Barry’s Bay. Archer says that while no roads will be closed due to the triathlon, police will be on site to make sure athletes are safe around traffic. The route will see runners and cyclists on Highway 60, Siberia Road, John Street, Bay Street and Lakeshore Drive.
