An off duty OPP officer is being praised for his heroic and life-saving actions.

Constable Jared Moore was out for a walk near round lake on February 24th when he saw two snowmobiles.

Just then, Moore saw one plunge into the water along with its rider.

The other rider, who turned out to be her husband, tried to rescue her but also slid into the water.

Officer Moore managed to reach them and pull both of them from the water, then administering first aid until first responders arrived.

We spoke with OPP spokesperson Bill Dickey about the rescue.

“Normally when you do cold water rescues you’re wearing a dry suit” he said,

“We leave it to the rescue professionals, the firefighters. Some of our members have cold water rescue. They’ve done this before. They know what to do. But not everyone does, even OPP members.” Dickey continued, “There was no way for him to know he too wouldn’t fall through the ice. He used his skills and his abilities. He was very careful getting up to the edge. Using a rope to try and get them in, get all the right things and this worked out for the best for everyone”

Later that day Constable Moore, still off-duty, picked up the couple at the hospital, drove them back to Round Lake and helped them load up the snowmobile that was still on the ice.
