White water kayakers took to the Chalet Rapids for MKC’s annual Summer Slalom races.

Co-owner of MKC and CBC’s white water colour commentator Claudia Van Wijk says the slalom is purposely planned to be a week ahead of nationals to give competitors a chance to hit the Chalet Rapids.

Athletes like Adrian Cole and Lois Betteridge are moving on to Quebec next weekend for Canadian Nationals.

The two Alberta teammates have both formally competed in the world junior and world under-23 stages.

Instructor Mark Long says yesterday’s event drew in a solid mix of competitors as many of the participants made the stop en-route to the Canadian Nationals.

Over 30 kayakers and canoers took to the course just outside of Barry’s Bay.

Ontario’s head coach Anthony Colin says the sport is a combination of athletic ability, preparation on the course and execution.

He’ll be overseeing nine of the athletes competing in next week’s nationals.
