Communities across the region are mourning the loss of Madawaska Valley Mayor Mark Willmer.
In a social media post Friday the Township shared the news of Mayor Willmer’s passing.
“It is with profound sadness that the Township of Madawaska Valley announces the passing of Mayor Mark Willmer.” read the post.
“Mayor Willmer had served as mayor since 2022, after being a member of our Council from 2018 to 2022, and had dedicated his life to public service. He was a strong advocate for our community, representing the Township as a member of the County of Renfrew’s County Council and serving on multiple committees over the course of his tenure as mayor…”
“Council, staff, and the entire community will mourn the loss of Mark and his dedication to his community…Our thoughts are with his partner Janet, his children and grandchildren, and extended family and friends at this time..”
Renfrew County Warden Peter Emon also posted the County’s condolences, sharing that he knew Mayor Willmer to be a ‘quiet, thoughtful and caring person and that those traits, combined with his wanting to do the right and fair thing, made him a valued member of County Council and the community.’Â
“Mark wanted only the best for his community and worked constantly for that to occur.”Â
“His staff and Council were a source of pride for Mark and they will no doubt miss his leadership and wise counsel. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them.”
“Mark was so proud of his family and their journeys to success. He spoke often with wonderment about his and their lives. Please cherish your memories of him as passionately and reverently as he held your impact on him. You have our deepest sympathies.
Thank you for sharing Mark with the County of Renfrew and his home community of Madawaska Valley.”
In honour of Mayor Willmer, flags around the Township of Madawaska Valley are being lowered to half mast.
The County of Renfrew will be lowering the flags at County Administration Buildings to half-mast in honour of Mayor Wilmer as well.
