European blackout hits home for Maynooth resident during election day

While residents headed to the polls in Maynooth yesterday, one resident was concerned about more than Canada.

Just after 6 p.m., we spoke with Hastings Highlands resident Olena outside the ANAF Barn polling station in Maynooth. She told Moose FM her husband is currently in Spain, where they had been experiencing a blackout — one that stretched across parts of Europe.

While it is reported that the power is now back on, yesterday Olena said people were scrambling for supplies, not knowing how long it could last.

“My husband said this morning that there was a blackout for a few hours in the town called Valladolid, but it’s all across Spain, Portugal, Italy, some parts of France and small parts of Europe as well.”

“And there was no Wi-Fi, no traffic lights working, accidents on streets. He was distressed. The first thing he did is (run) to the grocery store to grab any food supplies that he could.

“He couldn’t find water in two or three grocery stores… and his friend did the same. They ran and grabbed just some chips, and he said, ‘I grabbed food that I don’t usually reach for because it was all that was left.’”

Olena added that her husband reported the electricity had gone on and off for a few hours before staying off again.

We asked Olena if she knew why the blackout had occurred, but she said she had not heard why.

“The articles that he sent me, it just says blackout across Europe, no electricity… that’s it.”

As of 10 a.m. Tuesday, the cause of the blackout had still not been determined.
