Ontario’s Liberal Caucus has accused the Prince Edward-Hastings MPP of stonewalling the passage of the Safer School Zones Act.
The caucus says the bill would target unsafe drivers and speeding to protect children.
But Smith says the act will actually allow for the reintroduction of photo radar in community safety zones, which are defined, so they can be anywhere in a municipality.
He says the province should amend the act to allow for photo radar on school bus crossing arms instead, or to make the fines in community safety zones the same as those in school zones.
Smith also points out that the Liberal party currently holds a majority government in Ontario, so he can’t stop the bill from passing.
