Think Turtle Conservation Initiative Want you to Care About Turtles

We see them on the side of the road and may not think much of them, but a Bancroft group wants to change that.

Kelly Wallace, the founder of the Think Turtle Conservation Initiative, says the “WATCH 4 TURTLES” sign campaign has grown a lot in the past year.

Central Ontario is home to 1/3 of Ontario’s Turtles. Wallace says that with all seven species of turtle designated at-risk, we all could lend a hand in helping protect turtles. She says it’s as easy as helping them cross the road.

So far, the campaign has raised over $1,800. Wallace says the money will go to the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre and Kawartha Turtle Trauma Centre. She adds that over 630 turtles have been admitted since April.

Wallace added that turtles are more important than people realize. She says turtles, especially snapping turtles, play a big part in helping clean bodies of water.

Wallace says she started this campaign because her heart breaks knowing her niece and nephew might not see a turtle. She says seeing people put up signs in their yards has been rewarding to see.

If you want to report an injured turtle sighting, you can email Wallace at [email protected]. You can also click here to find out more about the initiative.
