The Bancroft Gemboree has officially kicked off its 59th year.

Rocky the rockhound joined dignitaries in front of the North Hastings Community Centre for the official opening ceremony at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Moose FM caught up with Town Manager Andra Kauffeltd just ahead of the event to hear about some unique things happening this year.

“The Ontario Science Centre is here with an interactive display, the Canadian Museum of Natural History has sent some specimens and a display that’s also at the curling club, gold panning is back, it’s always a favorite. Along with almost 100 vendors of minerals, gems and fossils.”

MP Shelby Kramp-Neuman also spoke, sharing her appreciation of the event and how it brings people together.

“People coming into the area always feel welcome here…The biggest form of respect is when people listen to each other, listen with intent. So I encourage when you’re going around to the different vendors here today, listen to what they have to say.”

Kramp-Neuman went on to acknowledge the events admirable history.

“Fifty-nine years ago, in 1965,  was not thought of yet.” she joked,  “If we could go back in time, what has not changed is the beautiful connection that you have with people when you just take a step back and enjoy some weekend fun and some weekend exploring, some comradery.”

The event officially opened at 10 a.m. It will be open every day 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There’s a shuttle to provide transportation between venues.
