The Township of Madawaska Valley recently announced that it has assumed the lease of a privately-owned gravel pit at Highway 62 and Combermere Road.

The gravel pit is a gift from the estate of Robert Maika.

According to the township, in late 2024, staff were approached by Judy Maika about taking over the lease of the pit.

At last week’s council meeting, council confirmed the lease transfer from the Ministry of Natural Resources was complete.

“This resource will serve as an invaluable asset for our community for years to come, providing essential materials and supporting local projects….This transfer of lease is viewed by council as a gift from the estate of Robert Maika, and in recognition council proposed and unanimously voted in favour of naming the pit in honour of Robert.”

The township expressed their gratitude to Maika and went on to note that the lease of the pit will result in ‘significant cost savings’ to the municipality.
